Types of Industrial Agitator Mixers and Their Applications

Top-Entry Agitators

These are the most common in industrial settings. Mounted on the top of a tank, they are used for large-scale blending and solids suspension.

  • Low-Speed Agitator Mixers: Ideal for high-viscosity materials like resins or heavy syrups.

Side-Entry Agitators

Understanding Impeller Design: Axial vs. Radial Flow

Axial Flow Impellers

These move fluid parallel to the motor shaft. They are high-efficiency, low-power blades designed for:

  • Liquid-liquid blending.

  • Maintaining solids in suspension.

  • General circulation.

Radial Flow Impellers

These move fluid outward toward the tank walls. They create high levels of turbulence and shear, making them perfect for:

  • Gas dispersion (e.g., aerating a fermentation tank).

  • Emulsification (breaking down oil droplets).

Key Selection Criteria for Industrial Agitator Mixers

When procuring a mixer for your facility, several technical factors must be calculated to ensure longevity and performance.

Fluid Viscosity and Density

The “thickness” of your fluid dictates the torque required. A agitator mixer designed for water will fail if used for heavy molasses. High-viscosity fluids often require Anchor or Helical Ribbon impellers that sweep the tank walls to prevent stagnation.

Tank Geometry and Baffles

The shape of the vessel matters. Round tanks are standard, but without baffles (vertical plates attached to the tank walls), the fluid will simply swirl in a vortex without actually mixing. Baffles convert swirling motion into top-to-bottom turnover.
